Recreating Hokusai's masterpiece "The Great Wave of Kanagawa" is something I wanted to do for a very long time. It is one of my favourite iconic images. Painted over the best part of eight weeks I was meticulous in reproducing the colours and detail in this large painting and believe me it was quite an effort. Well worth it, the finished piece is extremely powerful and one which will invite comment and admiration, of that there is no doubt.
Originally created as a woodblock print sometime between 1830 & 1833, part of his series Thirty six views of Mount Fuji, it's one of the most recognised images in Japanese art across the world. An image I've always admired.
At a recent auction at Bonhams an original print sold for £75,650... I don't expect quite that much but I wouldn't refuse the offer either :0)
